Tangled no more

Spider webs. There is something about spider webs that has always fascinated me.

Just the thought of having a spider in the house creeps me out. (Quinton can tell you all about my general reaction to bugs!). But that aside, it’s incredible what an incy wincy spider can put together in no time.

What starts of as a couple of lines can quickly turn into a very intricate wall-hanging of sorts around the house…especially if you don’t keep up with housekeeping on a regular basis. Pretty cool to look at, but it’s a deadly trap for other insects.

The spider doesn’t even have to waste any energy chasing down its prey to make a meal of it. It simply lies in wait for the next meal to get tangled in the web.

The past couple of weeks have been challenging for me – to say the least. You know how frustrating it can be when things don’t go your way, right? Well, I was reminded of past experiences that didn’t go the way that I had wanted it to go, and it was painful to think about.

For about a week, I carefully looked at how these frustrating experiences have altered the way that I’ve handled my goals and dreams. I’m sad to say that over the years, I’ve given up on many aspirations and allowed all sorts of fears to take root in my heart.

  • Fear over not having control;
  • Fear that situations won’t work out;
  • Fear of not knowing what will happen next;

…to name a few.

I didn’t want to endure the agony of holding a shattered dream in my hands once more. So instead of pursuing my dreams, I went ahead and shelved it – particularly the ones that required me to stretch my thinking and take risks.

This brings me back to what I said earlier about spider webs.

I realized that the enemy used all of these fears – that I hadn’t taken the time to address – to weave an elaborate web. Many of my dreams have been tangled and held hostage in this web of fear.

During my devotional time on Sunday morning (Aug. 21, 2011), the Lord spoke to me through Isaiah 41:10:

Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.

When I reflected on this verse, I heard His gentle voice asking me: “How much do you trust Me? How much do you trust that I am with you?”

“Of course I trust You, God!” I blurted out. “I trust You with every…”

I couldn’t finish my response. I became acutely aware of the fear that had been crippling my heart. It was holding me back from wholeheartedly trusting Him.

I asked the Lord for forgiveness for not placing complete and total trust in Him and for allowing fear to mangle my perspective on who He is – the God of all creation. I affirmed that henceforth, I will trust Him at all times with everything; no matter what.

If we believe that the Lord is with us, then there is no room for fear. Fear and faith cannot coexist. God clearly tells us to fear NOT.

Lord, reign in me and enable me to pursue the dreams that I know are from You!

Are there any fears in your life that have been holding your dreams hostage? Don’t allow your dreams to get entangled and suffocate in the web of fear any longer.

Surrender your fears into the hands of God. Allow the Holy Spirit to help you safeguard your heart against any fears that attempt to take up residence.

May God destroy any and all fear that has been holding you from moving forward in the matchless name of Jesus.

Fear not; for the Lord is with you!

For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).

  1. Amen!! Fear is the opposite if not trusting the Lord.
    Loved this post. God bless you QRI:)

    • Indeed it is! Trusting in the Lord also means to take Him at His Word. “Fear not” is pretty clear…yet we so many times fail to live by such simple and powerful principles from His Word. But with God at our side, we are more than conquerors. He is with us. There is no reason to be afraid. Thank you for your feedback. God bless you too!!!! 🙂
