I Want That Mountain!

(A message to all men. May The Lord speak to your hearts this day.

Ladies, you are also welcome to learn from these principles! Do read on!)

After a successful and fulfilling career, people look forward to one thing: Retirement.

Many can relate to having retirement fantasies that involve touring the world, endless golfing, and no alarm clocks. (Definitely; no alarm clocks!)

But would you ever consider taking on an incredibly tough challenge at that stage in life?

At an age when most would prefer to relax with a good book on a hammock stationed in a peaceful place, a man named Caleb asked for a mountain filled with terrifying enemies.

No joke. (You can read the full account in Joshua 14:6-15).

The Promised Land

The Scriptures tell us that Caleb was one of two bold men who remained steadfast in their belief that God will give the Israelites the Promised Land of Canaan after years of wandering through the wilderness. While many others were filled with fear at the sight of the giants who occupied the land, Caleb encouraged his people.

And God rewarded them.

When it came time for Joshua to allot portions of the Promised Land to the tribes, Caleb spoke with Joshua to remind him of what The Lord had done, and proceeded to say the following:

  • God has kept me alive just as He promised;
  • here I am today, 85 years old;
  • as yet, I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in;
  • now therefore, give me this mountain which The Lord spoke in that day; and
  • for you heard how the Anakim lived there in great and fortified cities. The Lord will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as The Lord said.

After fighting many battles against all the enemies who came against his people, you would think that Caleb would be seeking out land that would be easy to maintain (i.e., green pastures).

But no. Caleb sought rugged terrain that was still occupied by fierce enemies! I wonder how many of us would have the boldness to ask for such a mountain, especially at the age of 85!

I admire Caleb for the following reasons:

  • He firmly believed in the Lord’s promises and he drew strength from Him.
  • He did not allow fear of the enemy or of the challenge he was facing to enter his heart.
  • He did not allow his age to be a barrier in his life.
  • He was a man of boldness.

The Reward

Joshua blessed Caleb and gave him the land of Hebron as an inheritance. Caleb drove out the Anakites, who had large and fortified cities (Joshua 15:13-14).

And because Caleb followed God wholeheartedly, Hebron remained an inheritance to Caleb’s descendants.

The land was no longer known by its former name, Kiriath Arba. The land was named after Arba, which used to be the greatest man among the Anakites. When the land became Caleb’s inheritance, it was called Hebron which means “association“.

Caleb partnered with The Lord to conquer an inheritance for his tribe and descendants. And the land had rest from war!

Dear Brother in The Lord,

Irrespective of your age, you may be at a point in your life where you feel that your strength is failing.

Or, you may be camping at your successes of yesterday, thinking that you have arrived.

Allow me to urge you to think about the promises of God over your life.

There are more territories for you to conquer. You have much to accomplish.
Don’t take the easy way out. Don’t lose momentum now.

Take a risk!

Whatever the challenge ahead of you may be, know that The Lord is Your Ally.

There are successive generations that are counting on you to advance.
They are counting on you to take on that responsibility.

Will you ask The Lord for that mountain?

If you choose to follow God wholeheartedly in your life,
He is prepared to give you that mountain as an inheritance!

Happy Father’s Day to my Hubby, Father & Father-in-love;
and to all the wonderful men!
